2nd-
Walleye World tickets are now available and we have
a good supply of hats as well. The weather is certainly
pleasant this time of year in comparison to last year
at this time. The rainbows are now running in the rivers
and the walleye will be beginning shortly. Before you
know it May 2nd will be here and it is time for walleye
fishing.
We have all of our licences in with Turkey season opening
on April 27th.
Mar.
11th-
I apologize for the delay in this being the final ice
fishing report, my wife's mother passed away just recently
and we have had a trying time getting all of the arrangements
made and now we are getting back into some sort of normality
around here.
We did get the final tally and info on the ice fishing
out on the Bay of Quinte and most reports were that
it was an extremely difficult year for ice fishing.
Many reports were that the walleye were being marked
and they would not be that active on feeding times and
feeding times varied considerably. Most guides did extremely
well however this year they worked for their success
being that the fish were difficult to locate a feeding
pod of walleyes. Ice conditions were great and the perch
fishing was great as well with many jumbos being caught.
I did talk with MNR asking what has happened out on
the Bay this year and they did explain that there was
a great deal of baitfish (alewife) in the Bay and the
walleyes were getting their bellies full on them. I
recall in the fall before freeze up when I was out in
the boat that I would mark huge pods of baitfish. I
now know that there were more baitfish in the area than
normal according to MNR. Hopefully this will assist
those that are big into salmon fishing
Feb. 25th-
We winding down to the last few days of ice fishing
on the Bay of Quinte and keep in mind the last day this
year is Sunday March 1st. We have been getting many
reports from anglers out there and some reports seem
to be more encouraging than others and all are reporting
difficulties being able to find a good school of agressive
feeding walleyes. I had a couple of anglers in the store
yesterday from Ohio that are up here each year at this
time and this year they are having difficulties getting
into some good walleyes. Their catches so far have been
very spotty and they are marking some fish but have
not been able to get the large school that they normally
locate. I did send them into another section and hopefully
they will be more successful there.
Another report came from a group of 7 anglers that have
also had the same string of luck, incidental catches
and only a couple of fish for their efforts that they
are putting into the fishing. They are up until the
end of the week and will try to update me as to their
remainder of the week. Their report states that they
are a party of 7 anglers and they were fishing Saturday
morning and evening west of the Belleville bridge and
iced 2 eaters between them. On Sunday they fished Big
Bay and got into some nice size jumbo perch between
a 1 - 1.5 lbs. and no walleyes. Monday morning they
landed a 29.5 in walleye and released it after pics
and they also stated they caught some more perch and
the bite lasted 45 minutes. On Tuesday their crew was
down to 5 anglers and they fished Peat's Point and they
marked very few fish and did not land any. Tuesday evening
they went back to Big Bay and lost one at the hole that
was in the 29 -30 in range.
I have been sending anglers to various areas such as
Snake Island, Rushbar, Minnie Blakely and of course
Big Bay and it seems the same all over the bite ends
as quickly as it gets going lasting approximately 30
- 45 mins. The bite lately has been better around 6
pm in many areas and again the bigger walleyes are being
caught at Big Bay with a good pile of perch in the area.
Yesterday I asked one of the guides to bring in a couple
of walleyes for me and he did bring in 2 walleyes that
were in the 2 lb range and another in the 4-5 lb range.
I cut them open to find the 2 lbers had empty stomachs
and the larger one had shads in it's stomach. Their
are reports that there are many gizzard shads in the
Bay and the walleyes feed on them and are too satisfied
to hit a lure with minnows. I know the reports may be
discouraging as this year has been a very difficult
year to get walleyes. Some are having great success
when they are out and then just as quickly as they get
them they seem to not want to hit their baits again
for the next couple of days. I guess that is fishing
and being persistant will eventually get you some walleyes.
Don't get discouraged enjoy yourselves and be safe,
keep an eye out there for your ice thickness as the
weather warms up in the next couple of days ice will
fade away.
Feb.
23rd-
We will be changing our hours after the ice fishing
season and they are posted above. We will most likely
be again opening our doors on a Sunday this fall in
time for the fall hunting season.
The weekend seemed to be a great weekend for the walleye
bite. There were many fish caught in all of the local
derby's and the largest one that won the Knight's of
Columbus derby weighed in at 9.82 lbs. and the same
angler had another at 8.46 lbs unfortunately he could
only enter 1 fish and there were also other anglers
with winning entries in the 7+ lb range. We will be
posting the winners on here as soon as I receive all
the info from the Knight's of Columbus. I am pleased
to say that the Knight's have reached their goal and
will be presenting the Belleville General Hospital with
a checque to assist in the purchasing of a Nitronox
Machine.
This is the last week on the Bay of Quinte to land your
monster walleyes for pics and memories etc. if you are
still interested in getting in the action I would recommend
getting a hold of a local guide and enjoy the experience.
There are many areas that do not have safe ice and the
local guides will be the ones that know where the safe
areas are. I noticed going over the Belleville bridge
yesterady at noon that there is open water from the
currents in that area. There are a few good size holes
there that will swallow up snow machines and ATV's and
not that far away from there are some ice huts. Be careful
where you head to and take all necessary precautions
the currents under the ice are going strong and eroding
the ice. The weather this week seems to be holding and
we will still have good ice for the remainder of the
week in Big Bay, Herchimer, Peats Point and places that
are low to non current areas. There are still a week
of great fishing left, take your time, have fun and
come back safe.
Feb.
21st-
The bite was on yesterday morning with quite a few walleyes
being caught in various areas. We have revceived a report
that there is a huge pressure crack coming from Big
Island and headed towards oint Anne. I do not have it
confirmed if it is all the way across to Point Anne
and hopefuuly we will get that info today. Be extremely
careful of thses pressure cracks and keep vehicles off
of the ice. The best method of transportation presently
would be your ATV's and snow machines.
Big Bay was the best area for getting into some good
size walleyes and the bite seem to hit early in the
morning and early afternoon until just after dark. Another
area that reported good success was at Telegraph Narrows
and the ice conditions there is not great, be extremely
careful if you are going to head out into that area,
the ice is thin there. Deseronto seemed to have some
success as well.
There are many derby's taking place today and if you
are out enjoy yourselves and return safe.
Feb.
20th-
The weather is a little colder today and another small
gathering of anglers form south of the border heading
out this morning hoping to hook into a 15-16 lb walleye.
The guides will have their work cut out for them this
morning as the fishing has been slow however the ones
they are landing have size and weight to them. Seems
like they are landing much larger fish and the numbers
are fewer. The guides have located a good school of
large fish, if only I could sneak out and see where
they are fishing maybe I would get a crack at them too.
We are hearing terrible reports from the Sherman's Point
area that a pressure crack there is quite large and
water is coming up through on the ice making it unsafe.
Be sure that you check the area that you are heading
to so that you do not get in trouble with your ATV's
and snow machines. Fishing all over has slowed down
considerably with reports of Hay Bay and Sherman's Point
being extremely slow however the perch are biting quite
well. Deseronto is also reporting incidental catches
and most of that is east of Forrester Island towards
the mouth of the Napanee River. The Telegraph Narrows
have been producing large walleyes and the ice conditions
there are not great in a large part of the narrows,
North Port is reporting good perch action and the odd
walleye eater size 1-3 lbs being caught there. I have
not received much of a report from Big Island which
is odd so I can not tell you how that is area is doing.
All winter long it seems to be the spot to be in as
it has been producing and with it being quiet now I
would suspect that the fishing has slowed down there
as well. Point Anne, Minnie Blakely, all the way to
Herchimer are also reporting slow fishing and the perch
seem to be doing well there. There has been increased
traffic around Cow Island and Peat's Point and the reports
there are the same as everywhere the fishing is slow
and hopefully things will pick up for the weekend as
there are many derby's in the area. We
have tickets for the Knights of Columbus Derby being
held tomorrow if you are interested in fishing the derby
there are many prizes I believe there are approximately
80 prizes and proceeds for the derby are going to the
Belleville Hospital to assist in purchasing Nitronox
Machine. Tickets are 20.00 and that includes dinner
and dance.
If you are heading out for this weekend be
careful, have fun and support the derby.
Feb.
17th-
This past weekend was a good weekend of fishing for
many anglers. Saturday and Sunday morning were very
productive and a few caught during the afternoon and
evening. Yesterday being Family Day did not produce
as many fish being caught as it did the previous couple
of days. The ice on the Bay is like a sheet of glasss
very clear and if you look down your hole you will be
able to see your lure when you are jigging in 15 FOW.
The weather for tomorrow is calling for snowy conditions
all day with about 5cm of snow accumulation. With the
snow coming it will blanket the ice which will make
it easier for travelling on and it will also assist
with the fishing blocking out the sunshine and daylight
through the ice. This is the time of year that the walleyes
are the most active and the right time of year to be
able to hook into a large walleye that is getting ready
to stage at the river's mouth. Last night a local angler
caught 3 large walleyes all int he 12 lb range and released
them all. He was hoping to get a couple in the 2-4 lb
range for the dinner table and was unsuccessful, we
should all have his problems. Another bunch of anglers
in this morning claiming to have had great success all
weekend as well and they did not fish yesterday. It
seems not evceryone has Family Day off of work, they
are headed out this morrning before they have to report
in for their afternnon shift. If you are heading out
today be careful where you are headed to as the ice
varies in thickness in most areas. Big Bay was a great
producer all weekend and Deseronto had a few being caught
there. Cow Island had amny small eaters caught in that
area with Rushbar reporting scary ice conditions and
fish being caught in that area as well. Hay Bay was
great Saturday morning and slowed down the remainder
of the weekend. Sherman's Point has been slow this year
all year, and Herchimer and Point Anne reporting amny
perch being caught witha couple of walleyes as well
to add to their mixed bag. If you are heading out be
careful and have fun you have a couple more weeks of
good fishing on the Bay until the end of the season
adn the next couple of weeks is the time to be out there
for the most productive time of the season.
Feb.
14th-
This weekend is the free fishing weekend for Ontario
Residents meaning that you do not need to purchase a
fishing licence and you can take the whole family out
to do some ice fishing and enjoy quality time. Monday
is also a holiday (Family Day) which is another day
to enjoy with the family. The fishing has picked up
with a good school of walleye in the area adn they seem
to be hungry making it a good time to bring them out
on the ice. Some areas are still not safe to venture
out to so I would suggest you pick your areas of where
you want to head out to. Big Bay is still a good area
with lots of ice and walleye, as well as Onderdonk having
good ice. I woudl not recommend driving out on the ice
with your trucks since we lost quite a bit of ice in
some areas and we certainly do not want any mishaps.
Hay Bay is posting some nice size table walleyes, Sherman's
Point is not reporting much lately, Deseronto is still
like a bee hive with many anglers out there. Point Anne
has been doing good all the way across to Big Island.
We have not heard much from Herchimer and George St.
area are starting to see more of a concentration of
anglers. It is that time of the year that the walleye
head into the bay area in front of Moira River to being
their staging. I would expect good results coming from
George St. all the way out to Cow Island and Rushbar.
If you are heading out be careful and enjoy your weekend.
We still have a great supply of mud minnows and are
the only ones in the area with muds.
Feb.
12th-
We had quite a bit of rain last night and that certainly
got rid of the majority of the snow. There is quite
a bit of water on the ice and in some areas I would
not recommend going out until the weekend when the weather
will be dipping below freezing and tighten everything
out there. We have been getting reports of poor ice
conditions in the Deseronto and parts of Long Reach
where the ice goes from 8" down to 3" and
back up to 8" all in a couple of feet. The underwater
currents are eroding the ice and making it unsafe in
areas. If you are interested in getting out this weekend
I suggest you check with your local bait shops to see
where the best areas are and if want to get into some
good action then I recommend going with some of the
local guides in the area, they are on the ice everyday
and know the bay extremely well. If you are heading
out be careful and return safe.
Feb.
10th-
This
has been a tough week ice fishing and there have been
reports of some anglers getting a couple of fish in
their group and they worked hard fishing all day. Hawg
Hunter has been out with a good group of anglers and
they got a few and the largest being just over 8lbs.
He did get into a couple last night and has located
a good school of walleyes that seem to be hungry for
bait. We have cancelled his bookings for this week and
re-scheduled them for the following week due to the
poor weather conditions in the next couple of days.
We are expecting quite a lousy day tomorrow with rain
for most part of the day and temperatures hitting +9.
That will certainly erode some of the water around Deseronto,
Telegraph Narrows and out around Trident Point and Rushbar.
I recommend that everyone wait until after the weekend
to go back into these areas, we are to get colder weather
coming in this weekend and things will tighten up and
hopefully get back to fishing next week. Big Bay still
has lots of ice and there is quite a bit of water on
the ice right now making it difficult in keeping your
feet dry.
Feb. 6th-
The weather is going to get milder in the next couple
of days and the walleye are still biting, the guides
seem to have hit a large school of walleyes that have
moved into the area
and they having been doing well each day. Tomorrow the
weather is calling for some ice turning to drizzle and
that should clearup in the afternoon. We will also have
some fog in the morning and that will cause some from
being able to navigate on the bay. There will ba a large
group of anglers (approximately 22) here tomorrow morning
going out with the guides(Hawg Hunter and partner) and
I will try to meet up with them in the afternoon and
get some fishing in. Most reports coming in from Thompson's
Point and Sherman's Point are reporting some perch being
caught and no walleyes, and Deseronto is spotty with
the odd one being caught. With the milder weather coming
this week you will have to be extremely careful where
to fish in Deseronto as there is a lot of current under
the ice. Big Bay still has alot of safe ice and the
fishing there is also spotty at times. Minnie Blakely,
Rushbar and Herchimer are reporting perch being caught
and the walleye are being marked but no takers. Belleville
area is getting some small walleyes moving into the
area with the odd one being caught. Nothing at Potter's
Creek and the mouth of Trenton is perducing some perch.
We have also learned that some sneaking anglers are
trying to follow Hawg Hunter around to see where he
is fishing and this year he is not driving his little
brown truck he has 3 differnt vehicles that he takes
out there and then takes his ATV out on the ice so he
can not be spotted. He is keeping his spots for his
paying customers that are coming uo wanting to get into
some fish. He has been getting some nice size walleyes
and I promised him that I would not post the pics so
that we do not get a flood of anglers fishing around
him and his customers. I also promised not to give his
locations away by posting on here. Those of you coming
up here this month which is the month for monster walleyes
you wil be having some fun hooking into them with Hawg
Hunter. If you are heading out this weekend be careful
where you are heading to and return back safe with some
fish.
Feb.
3rd-
I
was out this morning at Point Anne and got word that
a pickup truck went through the ice and is at the bottom
of Bay of Quinte. The
area that the vehicle went through is south of Minnie
Blakely Shoal and west of the buoy. There were no casualities
and we are pleased to report that, the anglers were
local residents and they are at home safe. The fire
department went out nad placed a barricade around the
area to prevent others from going through the same hole.
We have had a couple of days of warm weather and with
the underwater currents eroding at the ice is unsafe
for pickup trucks to be out there in that area. If you
are heading into that area be safe and stay clear of
the barricade.
Walleyes are biting again and the fishing has seemed
to pick up we will have more info later today as we
receive it. I will be out later this afternoon and see
how the anglers have been doing in the areas. If you
are heading out today be careful and return safe.
Feb. 2nd-
The
snow storms have finally settled down some and rumors
have it that we might get another one in the next couple
of days. There has been some fishing oni the weekend
however not enough anglers were out on the ice due to
the fact of the amount of snow preventing them from
getting out. Reports from Deseronto were that fishing
was slow there and Telegraph Narrows seen a bit of action.
Big Island had some success and few anglers, most of
the area guides were out Friday and the storm had them
return within a couple of hours just trying to get their
gear off of the ice. Saturday had anglers out that had
access to a snow machine to get to their favorite spots.
Today was a great day weather wise and the sun did pack
some of the snow down. Most anglers were heading out
from Herchimer and Peat's Point to Cow Island and getting
a couple of walleyes there in the 1- 4 lb range. I am
sure in the next couple of days we will see more action
out on the bay and get things ready for this weekend
where we are expecting a huge turnout for the first
weekend of February. If you are heading out this week
be safe and have fun.
